If you've just inked a contract to write a Star Trek novel (or a novel based on The X-Files, Babylon 5, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys or any other TV show), you might find this tip of helpful.
When you watch a series for which you plan to write, turn on your television's closed captioning display. (Most newer sets have it. Check your owner's manual.) This way you'll see every word as it is spoken.
Why? Several reasons. You'll get a much better feel for how each character talks. You'll see all the strange names and odd terms spelled out. And reading reinforces what you hear; you'll remember it better.
In short, it will help you write better media fiction. (Even if it doesn't, it can't hurt, right?)
I have published three Star Trek novels thus far, and I'm certain #2 and #3 are better for my discovering this "study aid" technique.
