Books From April 2008
Seen Through the
SFWA Circulating Book Plan

Compiled by Michael H. Payne

Butcher, Jim: Small Favor (Roc, Apr08)

I've only read a couple of this series--usually, I get too bogged down in the mythology of the backstory and lose my bearings pretty quickly--but this one starts off with a shot and never slows down. Butcher tells a good story from front to back, and he mixes in the various bits and pieces of what's come before just when and where I needed them to understand what was going on.

Gunn, David: Death's Head: Maximum Offense (Del Rey, Apr08)

I enjoyed the first book in this series last year but didn't know there even was a second book till I ran across it at the library where I work. So this technically doesn't belong here since I didn't get the book through the Circulating Book Plan, but, well, if I can't break the rules now and again, who can? This one seemed a little less focused than the first with out 1st-person narrator seeming to be more "in the dark" through a larger portion of the story this time. Lots of carnage and a more-or-less happy ending result, however. A nicely done example of the shoot 'em up space opera.

And the rest of the month:

Andrews, Ilona: Magic Burns (Ace, Apr08)

Asprin, Robert: Dragons Wild (Ace, Apr08)

Chance, Karen: Embrace the Night (Roc, Apr08)

Cornish, D.M.: Lamplighter (Putman, Apr08)

Czerneda, Julie, ed.: Misspelled (DAW, Apr08)

Elliott, Kate: Shadow Gate (Tor, Apr08)

Nasir, Jamal: The Houses of Time (Tor, Apr08)

Park, Paul: The Hidden World (Tor, Apr08)

Steele, Allen: Galaxy Blues (Ace, Apr08)
