I'm an electrical engineer who has loved science fiction since I was ten years old. I write as a hobby, so I read a lot of ancient sci-fi (around fifty books a year) as well as some current stuff. I think a good place to start is with Theodore Sturgeon. His short stories, indeed all of his work, are masterpieces of prose form. I read them for the sheer beauty they contain, and I read them so I can learn prose style. I read Philip K. Dick to understand originality and plotting. Also good are Alfred Bester's short stories. I have an aversion to most work that contains demons, wizards, dragons, swords, and sorcery, and I avoid work that appears too similar to Star Wars or Star Trek, although I know there is some great stuff done by masterful writers that fall into these categories.
