*************************************************** George W. Proctor (1946-2008) *************************************************** Former Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America member, George Wyatt Proctor, died Sunday afternoon, August 3, 2008, after a short illness. He was 61. Proctor obtained a B.A. in journalism in 1969 from Texas Tech College in Lubbock and started working for the Dallas Morning News in the fall of 1969. Presently, he was a lecturer at the University of Texas at Arlington. Proctor's writing career included more than 90 published books, at least 11 of which were science fiction novels. He co-wrote the Swords of Raemllyn series with Robert E Vardeman. He was twice nominated for the best novel from the Western Writers Association. He was also a fanzine writer and an artist, with his best known art used on the cover of "Heavy Metal" magazine in early 1976. While he was a SFWA member, Proctor edited (with Sir Arthur C. Clarke) the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Vol. III and took over the Nebula Awards Report (NAR) after C.L. Grant. A memorial service was held at the University of Texas at Arlington.
