Browser-safe colors. Please remember, as you use these colors, that "browser-safe" means they'll work on most browsers, but that's no guarantee that they won't produce unpleasant results on some. Everything depends on the user's hardware, and you can't know what that will be. The safest bet is always to use a white background or a pale-colored background gif behind text; otherwise some people will have trouble reading it.

Lynx is the text-based browser in most common use.
Lynx-Me Lets you see what your pages will look like in Lynx, a text-based browser, without either downloading or using a public access version.
Spyglass HTML Validator 1.0 is a Win95 freeware HTML validator you can download, so you can validate your code (check it to make sure there are no errors) right on your own hard drive, and correct it before you upload it. Spyglass no longer supports this validator, but it's still available and it still works.
