Charles Harness

Author of Distinction

Charles Harness was first published in 1948 as a writer of science fiction and has gone on to produce a distinguished body of work over a career that extends through six decades. Born in West Texas, surrounded by cactus and sandstorms, he went on to earn degrees in chemistry and the law, both from George Washington University. He became a patent lawyer, a scientist, a husband, father, grandfather — and a marvelous writer. His literary work has been described as the purest science fiction, wild and imaginative, with intellect and power.

Mr. Harness couldn't accept the invitation to be our Author Emeritus speaker this year, being unable to travel. I would also like to note that he has continued to be active in the field, with stories and collections. In the spirit of the AE program, however, we would like to honor his science fiction here, to draw attention to the works of a giant in our field whose name may be lesser known to newer generations of readers and writers. It is my pleasure to honor Charles Harness as an author of distinction, and to include this appreciation of his work as well as the article by George Zebrowski that appears in the next issue of the Bulletin.
